Clara von Waldthausen

Before I became an organic skincare formulator, I worked many years as a fine art conservator. I preserved fine art – restoring cultural heritage with patience, reflection, and care.

In that world I learned how to preserve beauty authentically, based on research and science.

I learned that:

  • Less is more
  • Respecting the material is more powerful than changing it
  • And that beauty can best be preserved, not forcefully restored

I see skin in this same way — as something to lovingly protect, not alter.

Over the past ten years, while working at the University of Amsterdam and drawing deeply on its library, I have researched plants for their benefits to the skin, with a particular focus on those that grow along the Wadden Sea.

SKAAI was born from personal experience. At the age of 35, I suffered from severe skin inflammation and was forced to stop using commercial skincare products. Then, in 2013 while traveling through New Zealand, I stumbled upon the world of organic and natural skincare. I learned the value of blending organic ingredients to nourish the skin. After my study in skincare formulation, I received a research grant to explore the skin benefits of plants native to the Wadden Sea. All of this led to the creation of SKAAI.
